How Canadian Legal News collects, uses, protects, and discloses information.

Last updated: October 5, 2026.

Canadian Legal News ("Canadian Legal News," "CLN," "we," "us," or "our") respects the privacy of visitors, contributors, advertisers, and others who interact with canadianlegalnews.ca. This Privacy Policy explains the information we collect through the website and related public-facing services, why we collect it, how it may be used or disclosed, and the choices available to you.

We aim to collect only the information reasonably required to operate, secure, improve, and support Canadian Legal News. Where applicable, our handling of personal information is guided by the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act ("PIPEDA") and other applicable Canadian privacy laws.

1. Information you provide to us

We collect information that you choose to provide when you communicate with us or submit a form. Depending on the form or purpose, this may include your name, email address, telephone number, company or organization, website address, the contents of your message, an advertising inquiry, a contributor pitch, and information you otherwise choose to include in your correspondence.

We use this information to respond to you, evaluate or administer the request you submitted, maintain appropriate business records, prevent abuse, and communicate with you about the matter for which you contacted us. Please do not submit sensitive personal information that is not reasonably necessary for your inquiry.

2. Information collected automatically

When you visit the website, certain technical information may be generated or processed automatically by our hosting, security, and analytics systems. This may include your Internet Protocol address, browser and device information, user-agent information, date and time of access, pages viewed, interactions with the website, referring page or domain where available, approximate geographic information, and cookies or similar identifiers.

We use this information to operate and secure the website, understand how readers find and use our content, diagnose technical problems, measure audience and article performance, detect spam or abusive traffic, and improve the website and our reporting.

3. Analytics, referral information, and cookies

We use or may use analytics services, including Google Analytics, to understand website traffic and readership patterns. Google Analytics may use first-party cookies and process information about your browser, device, on-site activity, page URLs, referring sources, and approximate location. Google states that Google Analytics may process an IP address at collection for service, security, routing, and approximate-location purposes, but does not log or store the individual raw IP address in Google Analytics.

Referral information can sometimes identify the public website or domain from which a visitor arrived, including institutional, educational, government, or professional domains. This information does not give us access to a visitor's private network, internal systems, files, or identity merely because the visitor arrived from an institutional network.

Cookies are small data files stored by your browser. They may be used for analytics, security, authentication, and other website functionality. You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings, although blocking some cookies may affect website features. Where applicable law requires additional consent for a particular use of cookies or similar technologies, we will seek that consent.

4. Contact forms and anti-abuse protection

Our public contact, advertising, and contributor forms use Google reCAPTCHA or similar anti-abuse technology to help distinguish legitimate submissions from automated spam, fraud, and other abusive activity. Technical information relating to the request may be processed for those security purposes.

When you submit one of our forms, the information you provide is stored in our website backend and may also be transmitted through our email delivery provider so that we can receive the submission and send you an acknowledgement or response.

5. Service providers and processing locations

We use third-party service providers to operate Canadian Legal News. These providers may include Vercel for website hosting and delivery, Supabase for database and backend services, Resend for transactional email delivery, and Google for analytics and anti-abuse services. Our primary Supabase database is configured in a Canadian region, but some service providers or their subprocessors may process information in Canada, the United States, or other jurisdictions.

When personal information is processed outside Canada, it may be subject to the laws of the jurisdiction in which it is processed and may be accessible to courts, law-enforcement agencies, national-security authorities, or other governmental bodies in accordance with applicable law.

6. How we disclose information

We may disclose information in the following circumstances:

Canadian Legal News does not sell or rent individual visitors' personal information to third parties.

7. Retention

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, including to respond to inquiries, maintain appropriate business and editorial administration records, meet legal or accounting requirements, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, and protect the security and integrity of the website. Retention periods may vary depending on the type of information and the reason it was collected.

Analytics providers may retain analytics information according to the retention settings and terms applicable to the relevant service. When information is no longer reasonably required, we may delete, de-identify, or securely dispose of it, subject to legal and operational requirements.

8. Safeguards

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards appropriate to the nature of the information we handle. These measures may include access controls, authentication, encrypted network connections, restricted administrative access, database security controls, and service-provider security measures.

No Internet transmission, storage platform, or security system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Accordingly, we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to reduce foreseeable risks of unauthorized access, use, alteration, or disclosure.

9. Access, correction, withdrawal, and privacy questions

Subject to applicable law and any permitted exceptions, you may ask whether we hold personal information about you, request access to that information, ask us to correct inaccurate information, or raise a concern about our privacy practices. Where processing is based on consent, you may also withdraw consent, subject to legal or contractual restrictions and reasonable notice.

We may need to verify your identity before responding to a request. Some information may need to be retained where required or permitted by law, for security purposes, or to establish, exercise, or defend legal rights.

10. Editorial and journalistic activities

Canadian Legal News is a news and legal-information publication. This Privacy Policy is directed primarily to the operation of the website and related administrative, audience, commercial, and communications activities. Canadian privacy law may treat personal information collected, used, or disclosed solely for journalistic purposes differently from information handled for ordinary commercial or administrative purposes.

Nothing in this Privacy Policy is intended to restrict lawful newsgathering, reporting, commentary, publication, archiving, or other editorial activities, or to create rights or obligations beyond those provided by applicable law.

11. Children's privacy

Canadian Legal News is a general-audience legal news publication and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly seek to collect personal information from children under 13 through our public contact services.

12. External links and third-party websites

Our articles and pages may link to courts, governments, law firms, businesses, social platforms, source materials, advertisers, and other third-party websites. We do not control the privacy practices of those third parties. Their collection and use of information is governed by their own policies and practices.

13. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our services, technology, legal obligations, or information-handling practices. When we make changes, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. If a change is material, we may provide additional notice where appropriate.
